Courageous Advocacy
“Let all that you do be done in love.”
1 Corinthians 16:14
At Charles Kingsley’s CE Primary School, we believe that every child has the capacity to make a positive difference in the world. Inspired by our Christian vision and values, we encourage our pupils to develop into courageous advocates, young people who recognise injustice, speak out with compassion, and take meaningful action for the good of others.
What Is Courageous Advocacy?
‘Courageous advocacy’ means being brave enough to stand up for what is right, to support those in need, and to challenge unfairness wherever it is found.
At CKS, we help children to:
- Learn about the challenges people face locally, nationally and globally
- Understand the importance of service, compassion and justice
- Work together to raise awareness and help find solutions
- Take action that improves their community and contributes to the wider world
We believe that growing within a caring Christian environment strengthens pupils’ values, principles and sense of responsibility, equipping them to live with integrity in the 21st century.
Living Out Our Christian Values
CKS pupils are deeply committed to serving their local and regional communities. While charity work is an important expression of care, courageous advocacy goes beyond fundraising. It involves helping children understand inequalities, reflect on their responsibilities to others and take steps, large or small, to bring about positive change.
Through this, children learn that:
- Everyone has the power to make a difference
- Compassion is shown through action
- Their voices matter
Courageous Advocacy Across the Curriculum
Opportunities for courageous advocacy are woven through our concept‑led curriculum, ensuring that children make meaningful connections between what they learn and the world around them.
While we respond to issues as they emerge throughout the school year, these opportunities are also planned and mapped to support deeper understanding, moral reasoning and social action.
Heart of the Community (HOC) Award
Each child at CKS has the opportunity to earn a Heart of the Community Award, celebrating their commitment to the service of others. These projects often involve whole families and are a much‑loved part of our school culture.
The award is inspired by Mrs Mills, our long‑serving and dearly remembered lollipop lady, whose daily kindness and dedication continue to influence our community. At every HOC ceremony, children learn about her example and make their own pledge to “make a difference.”
A Call to Love and Service
We encourage children to grow in kindness, compassion and courage by reflecting on the words of John Wesley, which guide much of our approach to courageous advocacy:
“Do all the good you can.
By all the means you can.
In all the places you can.
At all the times you can.
To all the people you can.
As long as ever you can.”
— John Wesley
These words remind us that courageous advocacy is not only about extraordinary acts, but about the everyday choices to love, serve and uplift others.
